This is an illustration of a beautiful short story by Peter S. Beagle called "Chandail." The character in the center calls herself Lal. She is trying to heal the chandail, the strange sea creature tied to the boat. Chandail are able to call up old memories of humans and manipulate them, for which they are understandably much hated. The chandail has made itself appear to be a young child (to her left). Meanwhile, at one point giant eel-like creatures attack. I painted this like a continuous narrative, so that several events from the story are happening at once.
